After more than two years of research, the European macroproject SUCCIPACK, made up of 18 partners (companies, research centers and universities) from 6 European countries in which AINIA technological center collaborates very actively, has obtained for the first time a new bioplastic : PBS made 100% from renewable sources.
Until now, PBS was only obtained from fossil sources (oil). The new PBS obtained is biodegradable and comes entirely from renewable sources. Specifically, from carbohydrates from various organic sources. This PBS has been obtained by bacterial fermentation from succinic acid and 1,4-butanediol.
With the new bioplastic, the first prototypes of biodegradable and compostable packaging for vegetable burgers, fresh cheeses, smoked fish, nuts and meats have been developed.
PBS (polybutylene succinate) is a material with important benefits for the production of biodegradable and compostable packaging, while maintaining the properties necessary for the safety and preservation of food. Being versatile, it adapts to different transformation processes, without having to modify the production lines of packaging manufacturers and agri-food companies.
The central objective of SUCCIPACK in its more than two years of work has been to achieve prototypes of more sustainable packaging, biodegradable and compostable packaging. It has also been achieved that the prototypes have intelligent properties aimed at informing the biodegradation process of the container.
