bio-based packaging

The Finnish brand of beauty products Lumene is the first to launch biobased packaging application with the bottle and label made with the innovative wood-based material from UPM, later processed by Sabic.

The new Lumene bottle and self-adhesive label come from UPM BioVerno™ renewable naphtha, produced by UPM in Finland. The naphtha is processed into renewable polypropylene certified by Sabic, a world leader in the chemical industry, and then converted into both cosmetic containers commonly recyclable as in labels of products printed on label material UPM Raflatac Forest Film™.

A Nordic pioneer in circular beauty for over 20 years, Lumene chose to use bio-based raw materials to reduce the carbon footprint of its packaging.

“By cooperating with UPM and Sabic, we are taking the next important step on our path towards sustainability and driving the transition towards renewable resources. Lumen's ambition is to have 80% of its packaging made from bio-based and recycled plastics by 2025," he says. Essi Arola, director of R&D, packaging and sustainability at Lumene.

pioneering cooperation

This pioneering cooperation, in which both the jar and the Lumene film label are made from renewable raw materials, reduces the need for fossil-based plastics by more than 60 tons per year, while significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the packaging in 1,5 million jars per year.

The process begins when tall oil, a residue from the pulping process, is used to produce UPM BioVerno™ from UPM Biofuels. Wood-based renewable naphtha can be used to replace fossil feedstocks in various end uses.

Sabic then processes UPM BioVerno to make certified renewable polypropylene from its TRUCIRCLE™ portfolio. These certified renewable solutions, specifically resins and chemicals from biobased feedstocks, do not compete directly with the food chain and can contribute to reducing carbon emissions.

All parts of the supply chain are ISCC PLUS sustainability certified and a verified amount of bio-based raw material is put into the manufacturing process to produce the certified renewable plastic packaging.
