Picard reduces plastic consumption with a box of fiber-based ice cream from AR Packaging

July 13, 2021

AR Packaging has developed a cardboard ice cream box with integrated lid that saves 16,5 tons of plastic per year to support the effort of picard, French food company specialized in frozen products, for reducing the use of plastic packaging.

The new ice cream box contains 95% cardboard, based on renewable fibers from sustainably managed forests, which makes it recyclable in the flow of paper in many countries. The thin inner layer of polyethylene (PE) guarantees the protection of the product and the integrity of the packaging.

«Our main motivation is to look for alternatives to plastic packaging when the product and its environment allow it. We were looking for an innovative cardboard solution, which would allow us to find harmony in the complete Le Petit Marchand de Glaces range (other references packed in cardboard cups) ”, he said Gilles Lapique, Project Manager Packaging at Picard.

The development team at the AR Packaging plant in Cholet, France, took up the challenge and developed an easy-to-use alternative to the 500 ml plastic container. The box is supplied to the various Picard ice cream producers as a mounted tray with integrated lid and resealable option. Product leakage is prevented thanks to a clever construction with a special flap.
