Veritas, the leading supermarket chain in the distribution of organic products en Spain, incorporates trays made of wood cellulose pulp in the ready-to-go section of Cuina Veritas. This new measure represents another step for the company to eliminate added plastics from products that depend directly on its management and to achieve a neutral carbon footprint ein 2022.
The new packaging, which replaces the previous ones Plastic bottles, is made with wood cellulose pulp, a material that is produced mainly from recycled paper, thus preserving natural resources. Furthermore, it is ccomposable, which means that, once used, it can be deposited in the organic matter container.
With this new measure, the chain estimates that it will be able to reduce annually around 2.900 kilos of plastic per year and reduce the carbon footprint.
Within the framework of Veritas' commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), one of the main goals of the company is to achieve a neutral carbon footprint in 2022. In this sense, since 2015, Veritas has managed to reduce CO2 emissions by 46% through numerous initiatives, even though it has opened 37 new stores and achieved business growth of 28%.
Among the measures aimed at achieving this objective, the adaptation of the distribution in electric vehicles, the progressive change of refrigerant gases in the refrigerators of supermarkets or the use of renewable energy in the entire network of establishments and in warehouses since 2016.
Recently, the organic supermarket chain has also promoted projects of circular economy such as return of glass bottles from the Sant Aniol water brand; the 'Second Life Beer', produced with the same wheat used in the Veritas workshop; or the Textile Project, a service to recover and give a second life to clothes that are no longer used.
In 2016, Veritas was the first distribution company in Europe to receive the B Corp certificate, which recognizes companies that act daily to have a positive impact on people and the environment.
