Make a mark

Now in its third year, Make a mark is an exclusive design innovation project developed and initiated in 2021 by three global industry leaders: Avery Dennison, Estal and Kurz. The new packaging designs developed as part of the project were presented this week at Luxe Pack Monaco. Twenty of the world's leading packaging design agencies were invited to develop concepts around three pillars sustainability, luxury and innovation. Designers were encouraged to let their imagination run wild and try new materials, within the wine and spirits, beauty and fragrance and gourmet food sectors.

Design concepts have been transformed into physical prototypes using glass from Estal, labeling materials from Avery Dennison, and printing and embellishment tools from the Kurz Group. The twenty designs will appear in a special edition digital book and label sampler to inspire the global design community.

Some of this year's exquisite designs include:

  • Lavernia & Cienfuegos, Spain created “EDIT (036)” that combines industrial techniques with artisanal processes in a unique customizable bottle. The design incorporates two elements designed with strict sustainability standards: a custom glass piece available in five finishes and another piece that serves as a bottle stopper and base. The latter comes in six shapes, making for thirty-six potential combinations when combined with six cap options. Each solution is offered in three materials, each with three finishes, allowing users to customize their own bottles. In total, there are 40.500 possible combinations to choose from. The bottle features a unique Avery Dennison label displaying perfume information, packaged in a sturdy, lined box sealed with a customizable label. Users can customize components through a website, viewing and choosing various features for each element.
  • Bravo Design, South Africa integrates the oldest form of design (rock art) and the most recent innovation in design (AI generated content) into the creative process to tell the story of the Karoo mermaids to represent their blue agave spirit. Using a custom-embossed Estal glass bottle, the team used AI to generate patterns and textures inspired by mermaid scales and the natural symmetry of the agave plant. The neck label is made of multiple KURZ decorations to represent the shiny scales of a mermaid, while pearlescent paper is used for the main label adding new sensory possibilities.
  • Designsake Studio, USA focused on the continued rise in the earth's temperature to create 'Gingerly', a new luxury sunscreen brand inspired by skin, the sun and the sea, with the ultimate mission of plastic-free sun protection. In partnership with Estal, the team created a unique double-walled glass component inspired by the colors, shapes and textures of the sea. A speckled pattern, reminiscent of freckles and seashells, fills the inner wall of the bottle. KURZ's holographic designs nod to the textures and colors found in abalone shells, and embossed sunray details kiss the back label. Advances in technology allow glass to be embossed, using an Avery Denisson self-adhesive label.

In a joint statement on behalf of Avery Dennison, Estal and Kurz, Vladimir Tyulpin, Avery Dennison market segment leader for premium packaging solutions, said: “Year after year, our designers continue to push the boundaries in packaging design. luxury. This year's designs invite us all to learn more about harnessing the power of packaging and to jointly expand our knowledge of decorative materials and packaging containers. The teams involved have highlighted the infinite possibilities of our industry and we are extremely proud that beyond the project itself, we are forming a dynamic and creative community of thinkers and rebels, all united by our love of glass, labeling, packaging. and the desire to create new things.
