Coexpan participates in the "Recyqualipso" polystyrene recycling project in France

May 4th 2020

coexpan adheres to the initiative recyqualipso, of French origin, led by Syndifrais (National Union of Producers of Fresh Dairy Products) in collaboration with valueplast (expert in recycling of household plastic containers).

The project has been one of the 30 selected by Cytheus in 2019, to promote its development through financial support with the intention of improving the recyclability of plastic packaging, advancing in the integration of recycled materials in packaging, developing more sustainable alternative solutions and modernizing sorting centers and processing plants. recycling.

Since Polystyrene is one of the main resins used in the packaging of dairy products, the objective pursued by Recyqualipso is to contribute to the development of PS recycling in France by optimizing the quality of recycled material in yogurt packaging for new applications such as the extrusion of foil for food contact packaging and the development of more efficient recycling technologies (new sorting steps, optimization of washing conditions, etc.).

Among the different participants in this initiative, Coexpan collaborates as a Syndifrais partner, playing an essential role at the end of the value chain, where it carries out the extrusion process of the recovered material for its subsequent thermoforming of containers.

Based on various analyzes, both economic, technical and environmental in the different recovery scenarios (mechanical recycling, chemical recycling or new technologies, etc.), the optimal treatment for its development at an industrial level will be defined.

Collaboration in initiatives such as Recyqualipso reflect Coexpan's firm commitment to achieve a circular economy model that minimizes environmental impact. Among the initiatives motivated by circularity to which the company adheres, it is worth highlighting the project EPS SURE Life Project, subsidized by the European Commission and destined to the design of a new system for the collection, pre-treatment and recycling of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) waste to produce new Polystyrene (PS) containers suitable for contact with food. Likewise, Coexpan recently announced its participation in the association Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS), which aims to increase the circularity of styrenes.

Through its innovation and development center Innotech (Coexpan-Emsur), is working on the tests for the extrusion of the recovered PS pellets with positive preliminary results. Coexpan-Emsur's commitment to Sustainability is based on promoting the preservation of food, as well as offering products that optimize the use of natural resources, favoring local communities and promoting the conservation of the environment. Its vision of sustainability focuses on eco-design and the circularity of its packaging, reaffirming its contribution to a more sustainable packaging.
