PolyREC will report on the circularity of plastics in Europe

March 23th 2021

VinylPlus®, Petcore Europe®, PlasticsEurope® and Plastics Recyclers Europe® have agreed to join forces to form the organization PolyREC. PolyREC will monitor, verify and report on data from plastics recycling in Europe. This will be achieved through the use of a common data collection system: RecoTrace. PolyREC will ensure traceability, transparency and trust in recycled materials throughout the plastics value chain.

PolyREC will use the 20 years of experience and expertise that VinylPlus has to collect recycling data through its Recovinyl® data collection vehicle. VinylPlus CEO, Brigitte Dero, declares: «the circularity of plastics is a key opportunity to improve sustainability of plastic products. The European PVC industry, through VinylPlus, has learned the importance of monitoring and progress reporting. We are therefore pleased to share this many years of experience and work in collaboration with all sectors of the plastics industry to increase traceability and transparency in recycled plastics throughout the plastics value chain.

PolyREC comes at a time when monitoring the circularity of polymers is paramount, especially in the context of Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA). This system will be able to meet CPA targets, legislative traceability demands, and industry-wide plastic recycling commitments. The president of PRE, Ton emansHe explained that "establishing mechanisms that demonstrate progress in driving plastic circularity in a transparent manner is essential if we want to meet the EU's objectives."

The Managing Director of Petcore Europe, Christian crépet, announced that as "Petcore Europe has been a pioneer in monitoring PET recycling in Europe since the 1990s, its participation in a joint recycled plastics monitoring plan for the EU is timely and logical."
