HP announces its goals to combat climate change

May 26th 2021

HP is moving forward to boost an economy with carbon neutrality and fully regenerative, reduce your global environmental footprint and create an offer of sustainable products and solutions.

“Fighting the climate crisis is an unprecedented challenge that requires urgent action from the public and private sectors. We all share an interest in safeguarding our planet, and achieving a sustainable impact in the communities in which we are present, and this should be a priority for all companies ", he declares Henry Lords, President and CEO of HP. “At HP, we are fully committed to achieving our goal of becoming the most sustainable and fair technology company on the planet. These new targets reflect our continued efforts to achieve net zero carbon emissions, not only in our own operations, but throughout our value chain. Not only is this the right thing to do, but it also represents an increasingly important driver of innovation and growth that will strengthen our business in the future. "

To achieve these purposes, HP is focused on accelerating five strategic drivers, aimed at decoupling growth from carbon emissions and resource consumption, driving innovation, and transforming design and business models: printing and personal systems as a service, renewal of printing supplies, hardware as a service and certificate of second use; sustainable materials, increase the use of renewable and recycled materials; supply chain decarbonization, promote and support the reduction of carbon from suppliers, the use of renewable electricity, the adoption of land transport and alternative fuels and electric vehicles for the delivery of products; energy efficiency, design existing and new product technologies that are energy efficient; and forestry investments, address the fiber used in printing and packaging, investing in the restoration and protection of forests, and continue sourcing certified or recycled materials.

To achieve these goals, HP will be carbon neutral in its operations by 2025 and will reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% in absolute terms by 2030, compared to 2019. In addition, 75% of total annual product content and HP packaging, by weight, will come from recycled, renewable and / or reused materials, products and parts by 2030. These actions will help position HP to achieve zero net carbon emissions across its entire value chain by 2040. In line with targets for the application of circularity principles, HP's operations will produce zero waste at its managed facilities by 2025. HP's Customer Support organization will also be carbon neutral, both in HP operations and those managed by its partners, by 2030.

HP will pursue and accelerate a number of measures, such as allowing a circular economy by using more sustainable materials, such as recycled plastics and metals, and investing in the restoration and protection of forests.

In 2020, HP achieved zero deforestation for 99% of HP-branded paper and paper product packaging, with the remaining 1% evaluated to ensure that the use of the reported fiber complies with the HP Sustainable Paper and Wood Policy. HP-branded paper has been deforestation-free since 2016. For paper product packaging, this represents the culmination of five years of work to improve HP's purchasing processes and collaborate with more than 100 suppliers to drive Progress. HP has implemented a compliance assurance program to manage any corrective action and maintain this performance in the future.

To ensure that every page printed with HP is sourced responsibly and contributes to the restoration and protection of forests, HP created the Positive Forest Framework, which includes partnering with leading NGOs and organizations to take action beyond restoration and protection to include the development of science-based goals for forests, collaboration with industry, and innovation of more efficient printing technologies.
